Outlook.com – Windows 10 Shared Calendar Time Out

So I have been having a couple of issues with shared calendars on Outlook.com using Windows 10.

The first issue is the regular reminders I get telling me that  I need to ‘fix my account’ settings for my wife’s shared calendar. When I try to fix this, and provide her password and PIN, I am told that the PIN is incorrect – despite resetting her PIN.

The second issue is that (all of a sudden) my wife can no longer see my shared calendar – so time to fix this!

Simply sharing my calendar again did not work – I just got a spinning circle next to the “Adding calendar …” status and nothing happened.

To resolve the issue I had to remove my wife’s PIN from all of her computers. After rebooting them I re-shared my calendar and it worked.

How to reset your PIN

 

To remove your PIN click Start, then type Settings and open the Settings app. Navigate to Accounts, Sign-in options and then under the PIN heading click the Remove button.

How to Share your Calendar

First access your Calendar here: https://outlook.live.com/owa/

Click Share from the toolbar and then select the calendar you want to share.

Note: If you are already sharing this calendar with the intended recipient click the trash can icon next to their name to revoke their permissions.

Next, enter the email address of the person you want to share your calendar with then click the Share button and then Done.

Windows 10 – Brightness Not Working (Surface Pro 3)

My wife encountered an issue on her Surface Pro 3 (running Windows 10 Creators Update) this morning where the brightness sliders had no effect on the screen.

I took a look at it and found that the following solution worked for me:

  • Open Device Manager
  • Expand Sensors
  • Right click on HID Sensor Collection V2 and then select Uninstall from the pop up menu
  • Reboot

Windows 10 UWP – Template 10 Mobile Status Bar

Template 10 is a set of Visual Studio project templates for Windows 10 XAML / C# apps.

In my previous post I set the app theme to Light and found that the status bar was completely white on Windows 10 Mobile. The status icons were no longer visible.

Before we can make changes to the status bar we first need to add Windows Mobile Extensions for the UWP  to our references:

In the Solution Explorer right click on References and then click Add Reference. In the left pane select Universal Windows and then Extensions from the drop down menu. In the right hand pane select Windows Mobile Extensions for the UWP and click OK.

Now we can customize the status bar by adding the highlighted code to App.xaml.cs.

As you can see I set the background color to orange and the text to white:

Windows 10 Mobile – Outlook Mail: There is not enough memory or disk space to update the display

I got this error today opening an email in the Outlook Mail app on my Lumia 640XL running Windows 10. I am using the Insider app and am on the production ring:

There is not enough memory or disk space to update the display.

Currently the Outlook Mail app cannot be reinstalled on Windows 10 Mobile – this left me with the option of doing a hard reset as follows:

Swipe down from the top of the screen and then tap All Settings, System, and then About. Scroll down, then tap Reset your phone, and then follow the prompts.

Once I reset my phone and updated the Outlook Mail and Outlook Calendar app my phone functioned correctly again.

Template 10 – Error CS0234 The type or namespace name ‘ApplicationInsights’ does not exist

Template 10 is set of Visual Studio templates for Windows 10 UWP C# and XAML applications. For those who are interested there is a whole course about Template 10 on the Microsoft Virtual Academy site.

Once you have installed Template 10 via NuGet you will find that your project fails to build with the following error:

Error CS0234 The type or namespace name ‘ApplicationInsights’ does not exist in the namespace ‘Microsoft’ (are you missing an assembly reference?)

The solution is to add the following references to ApplicationInsights in project.json dependencies:

	"Microsoft.ApplicationInsights.WindowsApps": "1.0.0",

You should then be able to build and run your Template 10 project.

Windows 10 – How to stop sending and receiving updates to and from PCs on the Internet

The default delivery method for updates in Windows 10 is to get updates from Microsoft, PCs on your local network, and PCs on the Internet. This is a two way street – if you opt to get updates from other PCs on the Internet then you will at some point be using your own bandwidth to deliver updates to them.

Fortunately this is easily resolved as we can simply choose get updates from Microsoft and PCs on our local network as follows:

  • Click the Start button and then click Settings,
  • Click the Update & security button,
  • Click the blue link for Advanced options,
  • Click the blue link to Choose how updates are delivered,
  • Leave the toggle for updates set to On and then click the PCs on my local network radio button,
  • Close the Settings window.

Windows 10 – Open Explorer to This PC

By default Windows 10 opens Explorer to the Quick access view. This view highlights Frequent folders and Recent files.

I much prefer the This PC view which shows Folders and Devices and drives.

This is how to make This PC the default view:

  • Open Explorer and click the View menu and then the Options button *
  • Set the Open File Explorer to drop down menu to This PC and then click Ok.

* If you click the lower half of the options button you will also need to click Change folder and search options.
