Windows – CD DVD Drive – Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Today the driver for my DVD drive got corrupted, rendering the device inoperable.

Uninstalling the driver, scanning for hardware changes in Device Manager and rebooting did not resolve the issue.

Removing a couple of keys from the Windows Registry and rebooting did fix the issue:

  • From the Start Screen type regedit and then click on regedit,exe in the search results.
  • Browse to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  • Delete the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values from this key and reboot.
