Windows 8: Tweaking File Explorer To Open Computer Instead of Libraries

By Default the File Explorer in Windows 8 opens the Libraries folder. You can change the default location for File Explorer to Computer as follows.

Hold down the Shift key and then Right click the File Explorer icon in the taskbar and click Properties. In the Target field type the following and then click OK:

%windir%\explorer.exe “”

Note: If you copy and paste the above line you will need to delete the double quotes and then manually re-type them.

File Explorer will now open My Computer instead of Libraries.

  1. This will have it open “My Computer”
    %windir%\explorer.exe /root,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}
    This will have it open “My Documents”
    %windir%\explorer.exe “”
    which is what it SHOULD do by default and not have another confusing folder system integration called LIBRARIES???!!!??!

  2. Its working for me in Windows 8. Thanks for posting %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /E,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

  3. Great thanks – works for me but only if I type it as narcarsiss suggested. Why do they have to make it so difficult?

  4. Pasted %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /E,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

    Works fine – did not have to type it.

  5. Does anyone know how to have it open the last viewed directory when it was closed ?
    That is I want to go back to where I was when I last looked😉

  6. The problem with this solution is that after you click on the new File Explorer shortcut icon that you have pinned to the taskbar, it displays a 2nd File Explorer icon on your taskbar associated with the current # File Explorer windows you have open. I find the 2nd icon a complete waste of space and an eye-sore.

  7. In Windows 8.1 it changed, unpin Explorer from TaskBar, create a new shortcut on desktop & pin this new shortcut to TaskBar. example, to open into your DropBox folder use shortcut address %windir%\explorer.exe /e /n/select, C:\Users\Martin\Dropbox
