Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid – Installing Firefox 4

It has taken me a while, but I finally got round to manually installing Firefox 4 on Ubuntu 10.4. For those of you who can wait, or are going to upgrade, it looks like Firefox 4 will be available by default in Ubuntu 11.4.

Firefox 4 installation is quite simple. Click Applications, Accessories and then Terminal and enter the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox

Note: Installing Firefox 4 breaks Bindwood 1.0.4 which is the component of Ubuntu One that syncs Bookmarks. At the time of writing Bookmarks (and Contacts) do not sync to Ubuntu One on Lucid due to CouchDB issues. In the meantime Firefox 4 has a built in Sync feature – click Tools and Set Up Sync to configure it.

That’s it, enjoy Firefox 4!
