My Sony MP3 player is still going strong and has great sentimental value for me – I just wish that I could say the same for the bundled Sonic Stage software, which is a truly awful application. Sonic Stage is the only means of transferring audio onto the device and recently started to give me the following error:
The selected music file cannot be played because the system information has been changed. Click OK to automatically close Sonic Stage and open the Sonic Stage system information restore tool. Error code 00004e2e.
Of course the system information restore tool did nothing to fix the problem, but the fix for Windows 7 x64 is as follows:
- Click the Windows Orb and then Computer and browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Sony Shared\OpenMG\restorable.
- Select the files icv.dat and maclist.dat and copy them to the parent folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Sony Shared\OpenMG.
- Launch Sonic Stage and go through the recovery process.
- Launch Sonic Stage again.
So the fix was not so bad, but I can’t wait to ditch Sonic Stage when I do eventually need to get a new MP3 player.
